What is your favorite example of architecture and why?
I like the work of a group of architects whose work is phenomenological and tectonic: Tadao Ando, Peter Zumthor, Tom Kundig & Jim Olsen, Rick Joy. I came to them independently but later recognized their common ground through the writings of Kenneth Frampton.

The last good book I read:
‘The Creative Act: A Way of Being’ — Rick Rubin

Favorite project I’ve worked on:
Often, it’s the student’s project that I’m trying to help make better.

When I’m not designing architecture, you can find me…
teaching, hanging out with friends, playing guitar.

Favorite quote:
“I see the task of architecture as the defense of the authenticity of human experience.”  – Juhani Pallasmaa

Childhood dream job:
Astronaut

Favorite animal and why?
I’m a dog person, but… I love llamas. If only I could have a llama! I don’t know why. Perhaps their strange look, their aloofness. I don’t know why, I just love llamas.

If I hadn’t gone into architecture, I might have pursued…
Music. Law. Marine biology.

Favorite phase of design:
Conceptual and design development, but I like detailing as well.

What brings you joy?
Teaching. Also, hanging out with close friends: talking, laughing, eating, listening to music.

How am I engaged in my community?
I pay lots of parking tickets in Somerville.

Who inspires you?
People who live where thinking is discouraged, yet they think anyway.

Favorite music?
I like a wide variety of music:  Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (formerly with Of Monsters and Men), The War on Drugs, Snarky Puppy, Jack White, Yvette Young, U2, Tom Petty, Phoebe Bridgers, Khruangbin, Grace Kelly, Maggie Rogers, Chris Stapleton, Billie Eilish

I like going to hear live music as often as possible.  Upcoming shows in 2025 that I’m already booked to see: Grace Kelly, Jack White, Snarky Puppy, Dua Lipa. I also enjoy discovering artists who are awesome singer/songwriters but who are less well-known: David Ryan Harris, Ariel Posen, Troy Ramey, Mike Dawes.
