Once the home of a favorite neighborhood bakery, the DeAngeles Bakery Building began as a renovation to 3 adjoining buildings. When the existing structure was discovered to be far too deteriorated to be salvaged, it was back to the neighborhood to propose a new construction approach.
With community support and a strong desire to retain the character of the former building, Joy Squared Design worked closely with the developer and neighborhood groups to develop a vision for new construction that closely resembled the original building, while adding a fourth story, comprising nine residential units and a ground floor café space. The new design aspires to honor the old neighborhood by recreating many of the buildings’ historic architectural elements such as the rhythm of the bay windows, cornice and ground level retail space, while turning an eye toward the contemporary with the addition of a penthouse level, recessed from the roof line, with angled volumes and a materials palette that conveys firmness and warmth.
