Built in 1837, the two, side-by side single-family residences had been functioning for many years as a conjoined single-family, with low slung ceilings, settled floors and rambling rooms.
Having searched for a larger home for their growing family for several years without success, the owners resolved to renovate while adding a separate garage structure with in-law suite to the steeply sloped site.
The design introduces cohesion to the street-facing façade by way of a central entrance, while retaining the proportions of the original structures. The floors were reframed to allow for greater floor-to-ceiling height, and a shed dormer at the rear quietly adds an abundance of third floor living space for a primary suite. The circulation between rooms at each level provides flexibility and efficiency.
