The occupied historic renovation of this 100-year-old masonry building included envelope work, all new building systems, and a full accessibility overhaul, including the installation of a new elevator, as well as a new landscaped rear entry plaza serving the 56 SRO units and support services space.
Abby’s House was operating a social services and supportive housing operation in an historic building that had not had any significant upgrades in its 100-year life. Guided by Joy Squared Design’s planning and design expertise, the newly completed Abby’s renovation is now fully wheelchair accessible, with a new elevator, all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and is a gracious and welcoming center for the low income and homeless women Abby’s serves. 56 SRO rooms have been refurbished and three accessible SROs created.
All the work complies with the Massachusetts Historic Commission and National Parks Service design requirements, including new windows, envelope work and interior details. The project was constructed as an occupied renovation completed in four phases so that Abby’s housing, program and office functions would always be operational.
In addition to the housing, program spaces, offices and common areas, Abby’s now has a renovated 3,000 square foot thrift shop, and a beautiful new accessible entry, exterior plaza and landscaping to support community building and healing for the residents.
