Spindrift is an elderly housing development managed by the Nahant Housing Authority in Nahant, MA.
The building in which it is located has an interesting past – originally functioning in the early 19th century as a grade school (with entrances still labeled, quaintly, as “Boys” and “Girls”), it was adapted into housing in the 1980s with an addition nearly doubling the floor area.
Joy Squared Design’s contribution to the building was more modest in scale, but badly needed. The project created new space for the Nahant Housing Authority office within the building, as well as maintenance and storage space, and the building’s first elevator. Further improvements to accessibility involved interior renovation work, including individual units, public restrooms, stairs, and shared laundry and gathering spaces. Mechanical equipment and parking were also updated to meet current demands.
